Send in the clowns?Amusement parks are filled with rides, games and attractions for kids of all ages. They are usually thought of as happy, lively places, but when they for whatever reason close their doors forever, these abandoned amusement parks become eerie, darkly poetic landscapes. The Prypiat amusement park has been chillingly silent since the Chernobyl nuclear disaster in 1986. The Hồ Thủy Tiên water park in Vietnam was a sight to behold with its towering dragons and ornate design, but now it sits in ruins. There was an old West-themed Western Village in Japan that is now, ironically, a ghost town. Spreepark in what was once East Berlin features toppled dinosaurs and swan boats stuck in muck. You'll also see several evocative shots of all the discarded rides at the now-defunct Six Flags New Orleans, which closed forever after being decimated by Hurricane Katrina. Other abandoned amusement parks from around the world that you will see images of in this slideshow include Lai Chi Kok, American Adventure, Dogpatch U.S.A., Magic World, Nara Dreamland, Camelot, Luna Park Permanente di Roma, Wild Waters, Granada Studios Tour, Disney's River Country and many more.
No matter what age you are, we hope that your favorite amusement park is still exactly as you remember it. Even though the parks featured in this slideshow have seen better days, these images and the stories behind them will haunt you. Check them out! Get Started
